Why This Matters

“Diamond in the Rough” started as a writing exercise.

I didn’t know it would become a mixtape, a tour, or something that would bring so many people together. What started as an idea about pressure, growth, and becoming something greater has grown into something much bigger than the project itself.

And that’s why we’re bringing the Diamond in the Rough Open Mic back for its second year.

The mixtape chapter may be complete, but the meaning behind Diamond in the Rough remains.

A diamond doesn’t begin polished. It’s formed under pressure.

For me, that has always represented the experience of becoming—creating while you’re still figuring things out, believing in yourself when other people might not see the vision yet, and continuing forward through doubt, expectations, setbacks, and real-life obstacles.

That’s what this night is about.

This open mic is a space for people who are still becoming.

Not perfection—progress.
Not polish—truth.
Not having everything figured out—having the courage to step onto the stage anyway.

Whether you sing, rap, perform poetry, play an instrument, tell stories, or have something completely different to share, this stage exists for you to be heard.

My name is Isaiah Keaton, and so much of what I create—music, clothing, events, and community—comes from the same belief: if God has given us something meaningful, we should use it to create something meaningful for other people too.

Last year, we opened this stage for the first time.

This year, we’re continuing what we started.

And hopefully, year after year, Diamond in the Rough can continue becoming a place where artists, creatives, supporters, and people from different walks of life come together to remind each other that where you are right now does not determine where you can go.
